Bone Density Testing

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become more fragile and more likely to break.  In years past, osteoporosis could only be diagnosed after a woman broke a bone. By that time, her bones would be quite weak and her health compromised.

Our OB/GYN office has the latest GE Lunar Prodigy Dexa bone density machine. This is considered the “gold” standard for the diagnosis of osteopenia and osteoporosis. More importantly, it makes it possible to know your risk of osteoporosis before you actually break any bones.

What is a Bone Density Test?

A bone density test, also known as a densitometry or DXA scan, helps your physician determine whether you have osteoporosis or are at risk of osteoporosis. It is a seven minute procedure using minimal radiation to evaluate the lumbar spine and both hips. It is completely painless and the patient remains clothed the entire exam.

The bone density test uses X-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. A bone density test is a fairly accurate predictor of your risk of fracture.

Who Administers the Bone Density Test?

The actual test is administered by Karmen, our bone density tech, who is also certified by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry or ISCD.  The test is then reviewed by Dr. Robert Robins, who is also board certified by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry and re-certifies every five years.  Dr. Robins reviews each and every bone density test performed in our office, makes the diagnosis and also offers treatment options in his report for your doctor for review.

As our society ages, osteoporosis has become a significant health concern. The number of women who die each year secondary to sequela from a hip fracture is equal to the number of women who die each year from breast cancer.

Let us help ensure you are not part of this growing population.  Call our offices today to schedule your bone density test.
